Research

The strategic plan for research at Institute of Health Sciences can be summed up simply: Be the best at what we undertake to do. The research institute supports research priorities: the Videoconferencing; cross collaborations; and enabling research areas for remote medicine and education.

We build on our strengths when creating programs, recruiting faculty, and supporting interdisciplinary programs. IHS research is committed to knowledge transfer and engages in technology transfer, grants, and telemedicine development activities that benefit local, and national health care.

Brain Acoustic Monitor (BAM)
The brain acoustic monitor (BAM) measures pulsatile activity in the head and compares it with the driving (or source) pulsatile activity generated by the heart. Both are measured with noninvasive passive acoustic sensors – applied, respectively, to the forehead and to the radial, brachial or other suitable reference artery. By comparing different features of the two waveforms in both time and frequency domains it is possible to determine whether cerebral blood flow has been disrupted thereby flagging the potential for traumatic brain injury. Now presently being used by the US Government in Iraq for traumatic brain injury. Developed by Active Signal Technologies and is available for licensing through IHS.
